GSM explained: how to choose fabric weight for sportswear

GSM is the number buyers are asked for most often and understand least. It is simple once you know what it measures — and what it does not.

What GSM measures

GSM stands for grams per square metre: the weight of one square metre of fabric. A 140 GSM jersey fabric weighs 140 grams per square metre; a 400 GSM fleece weighs nearly three times as much for the same area.

Higher GSM means more fibre in the fabric, which usually means it is thicker, warmer, more opaque and harder-wearing. Lower GSM means lighter, cooler and faster-drying.

What GSM does not tell you

GSM is weight, not quality. Two fabrics of the same weight can feel completely different depending on the fibre (polyester, cotton, blends), the knit structure (interlock, mesh, pique, fleece) and the finish.

A 150 GSM polyester mesh and a 150 GSM polyester interlock weigh the same, but the mesh is open and airy while the interlock is smooth and solid. Always specify the fabric type together with the weight.

Typical weights by garment

These are common ranges used across the industry. Treat them as a starting point, not a rule.

  • Match jerseys (polyester interlock or mesh): 120–160 GSM
  • Basketball mesh jerseys: 150–220 GSM
  • Performance training tees (polyester-spandex): 140–200 GSM
  • Cotton t-shirts: 160–220 GSM, up to about 240 GSM for heavyweight and oversized styles
  • Polo shirts (pique): 180–220 GSM
  • Tracksuits (polyester tricot): 220–280 GSM
  • Hoodies and sweatshirts (fleece or French terry): 280–450 GSM

How to choose

Start with where and when the garment will be worn. Hot climates and high-intensity sports favour the lighter end of the range; cold weather and off-field wear favour the heavier end.

Then think about use. Match kit that is worn for a season can be lighter than a retail hoodie that has to feel substantial on the rail. Very light fabrics in pale colors can be see-through, so white and light jerseys often go slightly heavier.

Finally, remember that weight affects cost and shipping: heavier fabric uses more yarn, and a carton of 400 GSM hoodies weighs far more than a carton of jerseys.

If you are not sure

You do not need to specify GSM to get a quote. Tell us the sport, the climate and how the garment will be used, and we will recommend a fabric and weight. You can confirm it on the sample before bulk production.
